Paradigm of the Skateboard:
Is a Flexdex the true ascendant of the original skateboards from the 60's?
Look at history - you decide. Our Thesis: The Flexdex skateboard is the direct evolutionary ascendant to the original skateboards from the 60’s and 70’s when skateboarding was created and began its rise to wild popularity worldwide.
Flexdex competes for mindshare against other action sports in all but the Hardcore Longboarder segment. Many potential customers regularly engage in multiple action sports, i.e. surfing and skateboarding. However, more time invested in activities other than skateboarding means less time involved in skateboarding, less time involving friends in skateboarding and less time influencing others to participate in skateboarding. This is especially important for opinion leaders when considering group dynamics in schools and other groups. The competitive landscape in the skateboard industry is to a large extent defined by the narrow product portfolios of most skateboard manufacturers , who tend to produce exclusively street skateboards or exclusively longboard skateboards. Flexdex skateboards are unique. Flexdex competes by offering an alternative product to consumers of all skateboard types.
Notes on the Paradigm of a Skateboard: Flexdex vs. Competing Manufacturers
Today, the typical action sports enthusiast will describe a skateboard as a 32 inch long x 8 inch wide piece of laminated wood with the first and last 6 inches having a shallow angled rise. It will have 2 aluminum trucks front and back, each mounted with 2 wheels made from a polyurethane compound. Everything will be decorated with brightly colored graphics depicting skulls or making fun of something. This wooden board will break at some point.
At Flexdex, we have a different viewpoint on the skateboard paradigm. We believe that a Flexdex skateboard represents the essence of skateboarding – and that the current paradigm of a wooden double kicktail is simply a divergent branch on the evolution of the skateboard. This is NOT to say that the wooden vert deck is bad - on the contrary, it has allowed riders to push the very limits of what can be done on 4 wheels! And yes, we ride them in half-pipes, and skate parks along with our Flexdex boards.
What about the Rest of the World? We think that the Flexdex is the Skateboard for the Rest of Us. The wooden double kicktail skateboard is a very difficult board to ride and to master. Its hard small wheels and stiffness make it uncomfortable to ride on anything but the smooth surfaces of a skatepark or ramp. On the contrary, a Flexdex is easy to ride. Its flexible deck and larger, softer wheels roll over sidewalk cracks and small pebbles. It flexes and responds smoothly to shifts in weight. A wooden board needs to tilt left or right to turn. A Flexdex flexes and twists into each turn – the harder you drive into a turn with your body and weight, the tighter you turn. A wooden board looses speed in a turn as energy is drained during the tilting and turning process. A Flexdex directs more energy to the wheel in each turn as the board conforms to the radius of the turn the rider is making. A Flexdex is easier to ride, can be ridden longer more comfortably, and is more fun than a wooden skateboard. A Flexdex customer came up with the trademarked phrase “You Ride One….. You Want One!”
Result? The Flexdex skateboard is the direct evolutionary ascendant to the original skateboards from the 60’s and 70’s when skateboarding was created and began its rise to wild popularity worldwide.
